What is Neamul Soimarestilor about?

Neamul Soimarestilor is a historical novel written by Mihail Sadoveanu and published for the first time in 1915 by the Minerva Publishing House in Bucharest. The action of the novel takes place in Moldova at the beginning of the 17th century, during the reign of Stefan Tomsa II (1611-1615). The main source of inspiration for the novelist was the chronicle Letopisetul Tarii Moldovei de la Aaron Voda incoace (The Chronicle of Moldavia from Aaron Voda Onwards) by the chronicler Miron Costin (1633-1691) in which he relates the main historical events that took place during Tomsa's reign.

The novel follows the adventures of Tudor Soimaru, a peasant from Orhei who had wandered through the world. He joins the army of Tomsa, who had been installed as the ruler of Moldova with the help of the Turks. Tudor Soimaru becomes a captain and a friend of Simeon Barnova, the son of Elisabeta Movila, the former queen mother who had been exiled by Tomsa. Together, they fight against the invaders who want to overthrow Tomsa and restore Elisabeta's son, Constantin Movila, to the throne. These invaders are supported by some Polish and Cossack magnates, who have their own interests in Moldova. Tudor Soimaru also falls in love with Stana, the daughter of Stroie Orheianu, a boyar who had betrayed Tomsa and joined the rebels.

The novel is rich in historical details and vivid descriptions of the customs, costumes, landscapes, and battles of that era. It also portrays the complex political and social situation of Moldova, which was under constant threat from its powerful neighbors: Turkey, Poland, and Russia. The novel also explores the themes of loyalty, friendship, love, honor, and patriotism.
